Kenya MSME, informal-sector & enterprise fieldwork Updated 9 October 2026

Commissioning an MSME survey in Kenya? Raven supports structured business survey data collection in Kenya—from sampling-plan implementation and eligible business respondent recruitment to supervised interviews, data quality assurance and validated dataset handover.

We gather primary data from owners and managers of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) . Depending on the TOR, the study population may include registered businesses, unregistered and informal traders, women-led and youth-led enterprises, and sector- or location-specific business groups. We do not sell contact lists or treat generic online data scraping as primary survey fieldwork.

Who we support

Research agencies, financial-inclusion teams, enterprise-development programmes, investors and NGOs.

What we collect

Structured owner-manager interviews, agreed eligibility data and enterprise survey responses.

What you receive

Agreed accepted-complete records, quota tracking, QA documentation and a usable dataset.

Fieldwork only or wider research support? We can implement a client-approved questionnaire and sampling plan. Instrument development, statistical sample design, weighting, detailed analysis and evaluation reporting are included only when expressly agreed.

Business Survey Data Collection in Kenya: MSMEs, Traders & Enterprise Owners

An MSME survey in Kenya gathers structured responses from defined categories of micro, small and medium enterprises. The research may address trading activity, employment, access to finance, technology use or programme participation. Its value depends on selecting eligible enterprises, reaching the correct respondent and documenting how each interview was obtained.

MSME and enterprise survey assignments in Kenya
Survey focus Typical respondent and data requirements
MSME owner and manager surveys Eligible business decision-makers; enterprise size, trading activity, location, sector and questionnaire responses.
Women-led and youth-led enterprise surveys Client-defined ownership or management criteria, age rules, screening questions and quotas that may overlap.
Informal-sector and market-trader surveys Market-based or location-based interviewing, business-activity checks, trading characteristics and selection records.
Financial inclusion and enterprise access studies Approved questions on finance access, payment practices, barriers, business needs and programme participation.
Enterprise programme baseline or follow-up interviews Business respondents identified under a programme's approved research design, with consistent instruments and follow-up rules.

Who commissions these surveys? Development agencies, market-research firms, enterprise-support programmes, financial institutions, research consultancies and corporate teams seeking structured evidence about Kenyan businesses. The research question and intended use determine the method; Raven does not treat every assignment as interchangeable.

MSME Sampling, Respondent Eligibility & Quota Management

Before fieldwork begins, the commissioning team and Raven agree a clear respondent specification. That means stating what counts as an MSME for this study , who may answer on behalf of the enterprise, whether informal businesses qualify and how replacements or failed interviews are recorded.

What the fieldwork specification should define

  • Target population: business owners, senior managers, sole traders, market vendors or other authorised enterprise decision-makers.
  • Enterprise criteria: study-specific size thresholds, sector, operating status, location, ownership and inclusion/exclusion rules.
  • Sampling approach: approved business lists, geographic or market-area selection, referrals or other methods suitable for the research question.
  • Quotas and overlap: women-led, youth-led, sector, enterprise-size and county allocations; one respondent may legitimately satisfy more than one quota.
  • Disposition codes: eligible complete, ineligible, refused, unavailable, callback, incomplete and rejected after QA.
  • Representation limits: whether the design supports population estimates or only describes the interviewed sample.

Important distinction: a quota-based sample is not automatically statistically representative of Kenya's MSME population. Where probability estimates, weighting or confidence intervals are required, the sampling frame, design and analytical responsibilities must be specified in advance.

Illustrative commissioning brief

For example, a proposed 300-interview MSME survey could require an agreed mix of women-led and youth-led businesses across Nairobi, Nakuru and Kisumu. Before quotation, Raven would seek the enterprise eligibility rules, sample allocations, questionnaire duration, definition of a valid complete, recruitment approach, languages and timetable. This is a scoping illustration, not a claim that Raven has completed that project.

Kenya MSME survey context and definitions

Kenya's 2016 National MSME Survey (KNBS) is an official example of enterprise survey research that covered licensed businesses and household-based enterprises. The CBK survey on bank financing of MSMEs illustrates the different questions addressed by financial-sector research. These are public reference studies, not Raven client assignments .

For a commissioned micro, small and medium enterprises survey in Kenya, Raven follows the client-approved eligibility thresholds and research design. Published study definitions should not automatically be applied to a different survey population.

How Raven Conducts Business Survey Fieldwork

Our delivery approach is built around an agreed business respondent specification and a documented fieldwork plan. Assignment scale, staffing, tools and dates are confirmed before mobilisation.

  1. Review the TOR and questionnaire. Confirm research objective, eligible enterprises, sample size, town/county allocations, quotas, interview duration and required outputs.
  2. Set up screening and approvals. Agree who can respond, enterprise checks, introductions, consent, applicable research permissions and the protocol for reaching business owners.
  3. Pilot and brief enumerators. Test eligibility questions, skip logic, survey length, translations, callback procedures and quality-control instructions.
  4. Implement the approved survey. Use face-to-face or computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI), computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI), or a contracted mixed method as suitable for the sample.
  5. Monitor quotas and exceptions. Reconcile completions, disqualifications, interviewer issues, refusals and agreed quality checks during collection.
  6. Validate and hand over. Document accepted and rejected interviews, supply the agreed dataset and codebook, and report material deviations or remaining limitations.

Raven can work with client-approved KoboToolbox, ODK or comparable survey platforms where configuration, access permissions, data security and technical responsibilities are included in scope. Use of a particular platform is not assumed for every engagement.

Mobilisation: The schedule depends on sample size, business-response incidence, location access, languages, interviewer capacity and approvals. We provide a project-specific plan rather than advertising an unsupported universal turnaround time.

Accepted Survey Completes, Data Quality & Deliverables

For MSME surveys, the number of interviews completed on a dashboard is not the same as the number that meet the commissioning study's eligibility and data-quality rules.

A defensible accepted-complete standard

  1. Respondent eligibility: a business owner or authorised manager who meets the agreed inclusion criteria.
  2. Business eligibility: enterprise activity, size, sector and location satisfy the TOR.
  3. Participation: the applicable information, consent and data-processing requirements were met.
  4. Questionnaire integrity: mandatory sections are complete, with permitted skips or exceptions documented.
  5. Quality review: duplicate, timing, range, consistency or authorised back-check flags are resolved under agreed rules.

Supervision may include daily progress reports, quota checks, questionnaire logic testing, spot checks, authorised recontacts and exception logs. We agree which controls apply, who may access identifiable respondent data and how rejected records are handled.

Deliverables agreed before deployment

  • Fieldwork protocol, sample allocation and respondent-screening instructions.
  • Interview status, accepted-complete and quota reconciliation tables.
  • Validated dataset and variable codebook in the approved format.
  • QA and exception log identifying exclusions, replacements and outstanding limitations.
  • Concise fieldwork closeout report, with project-specific analysis only where contracted.

Data-transfer format, access restrictions, anonymisation or pseudonymisation procedures and retention periods follow the signed study protocol. We do not assume that every client requires, or is authorised to receive, directly identifying respondent data.

Business Survey Coverage, Research Approvals & Data Protection

Raven is based in Nairobi . Business survey assignments can be scoped for Kiambu, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kericho and other Kenyan towns or counties, subject to confirmed field staffing, market access, local languages, travel, supervision and budget. Listing a location does not imply that an enumerator team is permanently stationed there. See our areas of operation .

Research licences and ethical requirements

Depending on the nature of the study, fieldwork may require a NACOSTI research licence , ethical review, institutional permission or location-specific access approval. Responsibilities and timing must be agreed before collection. An unrelated operational licence does not replace research authorisation; confirm current procedures through the NACOSTI research portal .

Respondent and enterprise data

Business questionnaires may contain personal data about sole traders, owners, employees or financial circumstances. The project protocol should address the lawful basis for collection, consent where applicable, data minimisation, field-device security, controlled access, secure transfer and retention or deletion rules. Refer to Kenya's Office of the Data Protection Commissioner for current guidance.

Methodology review: Dr. Mary Aswan Ochieng , a sociologist and public-health researcher, supports research methodology review within agreed project responsibilities. See her Maseno University profile . Project staffing and technical sign-off are specified in the proposal rather than presumed from a web profile.

MSME Survey Costs in Kenya: Pricing Models & RFQs

The cost of business survey data collection in Kenya depends on what constitutes a valid completed interview, which enterprises must be recruited and how fieldwork is delivered. Raven prepares a project-specific quotation after reviewing the questionnaire, sample, counties, quotas, field method, QA and permissions.

Key cost drivers include the incidence of eligible businesses, questionnaire duration, sample size, quotas, town/county coverage, travel, language requirements, interview mode, recruitment difficulty, quality checks and dataset specification.

What to send for a comparable, accurate quote

  • TOR, research objective and draft questionnaire.
  • Target population, MSME eligibility criteria, sample size and proposed sampling method.
  • Women/youth/sector/location quotas and whether they overlap.
  • Interview length, CAPI/CATI/face-to-face preference, locations and respondent access arrangements.
  • Research permission status, fieldwork dates, accepted-complete standard and QA requirements.
  • Required dataset format, analysis expectations, invoicing conditions and procurement deadline.

Commercial clarity: A quotation should specify whether interviewer training, piloting, data cleaning, approved back-checks, replacements, taxes, platform costs and field travel are included or separately charged. That makes proposals comparable and reduces disputes over rejected interviews or changes to the sample.

MSME Survey in Kenya: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, where the TOR includes them and establishes how eligible informal businesses will be identified. Selection rules, location access and verification questions are agreed before fieldwork.

It can if the study permits overlapping quotas and the respondent or enterprise meets both agreed definitions. The allocation and reporting rules should be documented in the sampling plan.

Enumerator deployment and client-approved CAPI platforms can be included in an agreed fieldwork scope. The proposal confirms staffing, programming responsibilities, licences, data access and supervision.

We use the approved screening questions and selection rules: for example, the respondent's role, business activity, size, sector and location. The specific checks and handling of failed eligibility are agreed with the client.

Not automatically. Representativeness depends on the sampling frame, selection method, coverage and analysis. A quota sample may meet operational targets without supporting population-wide estimates.

A record that meets the agreed business and respondent eligibility, participation, required questionnaire and quality-review conditions. The acceptance standard and replacement policy are documented before collection.

Price and schedule depend on interview duration, sample eligibility, quotas, locations, recruitment, quality controls and necessary research permissions. Send a TOR for a costed mobilisation and delivery plan.

An MSME survey in Kenya is a structured study of eligible micro, small and medium enterprises. It can examine business operations, employment, access to finance, markets, technology or programme outcomes. The questionnaire, sampling approach and definition of an MSME depend on the research objective.

Raven can scope a Kenya-based fieldwork workstream for a research agency or consortium. The TOR should specify survey design responsibilities, eligible businesses, target counties, interview mode, language, required checks and the handover format. Staffing, timetable, permissions and contracting terms are confirmed in the proposal.

Share the research objective or TOR, target enterprise types, sample size, questionnaire duration, locations, quotas, proposed fieldwork dates, research-licence status and required dataset or reports. Raven can then price the agreed workstream and identify exclusions.
